Very good and almost great. September 3, 2010 Skobeans (Fl, USA) This unit replaced an old iHome iH5 that had finally started having several issues that made it impossible to use as an alarm clock. So out it went and in comes the new iP90.
The iP90 is sleek and a big departure from the previous unit in so many ways:
* It has buttons that you push instead of a dial to spin (a big issue as the iH5 aged). Although the click sound it makes when you depress the buttons is loud it is a definite improvement.
* It has presets for the AM/FM radio and features a skip ahead or back feature for the iPod.
* Great dimmer with more settings from bright light to totally off.
* A very good interface that lets you set your weekday, weekend, or entire week alarm settings with just a few button pushes.
* A cool sync feature lets you sync the unit to your iPod time. Dock your iPod push a button on the back of the unit and within a second it is sync'd to your iPod or iPhone time.
* It came with a good remote, but don't let this be the deciding factor for the purchase since it only works if you are directly in front of the unit. If you are directly in front of the unit why would you need the remote? Why can't they make a remote that works at an angle?
* It did not come with an insert for 1st gen Ipod Touch but I just used the one that came with my touch. It is white but it works great. Especially when you are trying to load the iPod in low light. It does look a bit odd black unit and white insert but I can live with it. No need to order another insert.
On to the sound of the unit:
* To be honest, initially this unit did not sound as good as me iH5. But after some tweaking the unit does a very good job with highs and an above average job with lows and bass. This unit comes with a built in equalizer. It is a simple 1 through 5 setting but it is an improvement over the old model for sure. It's still not quite up to the iH5 in total bass output but it gives you a bit clearer sound over all.
Now to the issues:
This unit came and after set up could not receive any AM or FM stations. I am not talking about it having issues with tuning I mean you could not even get any static sound when you set it to radio. No sound what so ever and no way to tune in any stations.
I called iHome and they said that I needed to return the unit to them or the seller. I chose the seller and they replaced the unit for me, and within a week I was up and running.
Overall I am very happy with the unit (after the replacement) and enjoy the new feature set this unit came with. I would recommend the unit but look for a little cheaper price point on Amazon. A seller listed this unit recently for $10 less than I paid, unless you are in a rush, save the cash.
Great - with one big flaw September 2, 2010 Jon Ingersoll I'm very pleased with everything about this product. The sound quality is terrific for an alarm clock radio. The time sync with my iphone works perfectly. The 5day alarm is wonderful so I don't have to remember to shut off my daily alarm on the weekends. Everything works exactly the way you would expect.
Except for the back-light. Unless you have the back-light on you cannot read the time in low light and if you have the back-light on, even at the lowest setting, it shines like a spotlight across my bedroom. Granted it is a soft light, but if you require a completely dark bedroom to sleep this is NOT the clock for you.
I've come to an acceptable solution to this buy getting some tinted window film and putting it over the clock face. Now at the lowest setting I can read the time and the light isn't so bright that it bothers me when I sleep.
Very good for the price, but has some flaws. August 26, 2010 L. Sanchez (Albuquerque, NM United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
If you're looking for a clock/radio/alarm for your iPod/iPhone for under $100, you really can't beat this product.
As for how it sounds, it's important to remember that this is a clock/radio, not a home audio system. Taking that into consideration, this product sounds better than everything else out there in this price range. Combine that with all the other features, and this is really a great product. Especially at $80.00.
The remote that ships with this unit at the time that I wrote this is the correct one. No need to send in for the replacement.
It works fine with, and charges the iPhone 4.
Things that I don't like (and the reason for 4 stars instead of 5):
The way you set, arm, and turn off the alarms seems unintuitive and overly complicated. It should be quick button presses and I find myself fiddling with the buttons way too much to get the alarms to do what I want.
I don't like that the whole face lights up. It would be better and less bothersome at night if only the characters would light.
The bottom line is that for the price, you really can't go wrong with this. I highly recommend.
Quit working altogether after 10 days, 4 uses. August 19, 2010 R. Archbold (Ventura, CA United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The title says it all. I bought it as a gift, wrapped it, and set it aside for a few weeks until my wife's birthday.
I tried to return it to Amazon.com, but didn't know it was defective until after the 30 day return window had expired. That will teach me to plan ahead.
I'm surprised that Amazon.com doesn't stand behind the merchandise they sell. I'll pick a local retailer next time.
Great product August 8, 2010 Steve This is exactly the product I was looking for. Rich, full sound, and two alarms. Allows me to play the radio or -- when there's nothing on I want to listen to -- my podcasts. Allows me to fall asleep or wake to the iPod. The only problem I had was that the iP90 didn't include a fitting for the 4th generation iPod; I had to order that separately from the iHome website.
